Heineman Flexible On Safe-Haven Law
Gov. Dave Heineman says he's flexible on an age limit for Nebraska's safe-haven law. The Legislature is considering the governor's proposal of 3 days as the limit for dropping a child off at a hospital without facing legal charges. But Heineman says he'll work with the Legislature and will support an age limit between 3 days and 30 days. Heineman spoke Monday on a statewide radio call-in show broadcast from KFOR in Lincoln.
A caller brought up the possibility of a 3-year age limit. Heineman says that's probably too old. Nebraska's safe-haven law currently has no age limit. That has led to the drop-off of 34 children since September _ many of them preteens and teenagers as old as 17. ___
