Helping Patients Look At The Big Picture

Palliative care medicine helps families and patients look at the big picture in their treatment.

The word palliative means 'to embrace with care,' Dr. Lisa Mansur practices the therapy and says it has now become a team approach to help patients understand what types of treatment are available.

She says research and studies show what kind of impact can be had, “these discussions definitely help empower the patients and their families to make good decisions about the patient's health care, especially with making sure that we're focusing on the interventions and things that can help them for quality, for dignity and for comfort,” Mansur says.

Good candidates for Palliative care include people who are in and out of the hospital frequently, people with chronic diseases and those who are approaching the end of life.
