Time is winding down until Christmas and people are filing into the local post offices.

The lines weren’t too bad Tuesday mid afternoon at the downtown Lincoln location.

That’s why one Lincoln woman wanted to stop by on her day off.

"Today, I don’t have to be anywhere. I’m just going to have fun with it. Getting it sent off is the most important,” Nikki Blitzkie said.

The Lincoln post master says more than 500,000 pieces of mail is sent out a day around this time of year and about 20–thousand packages are being delivered daily.

The busiest day for the United States Postal Service was Monday with more than 1.3 million pieces of mail being sent out, but things aren’t slowing down just yet.

"We’ll continue to see some brisk activity throughout the week this week with people getting people mailed off at the last minute,” Lincoln Post Master Kerry Kowalski said.

You still have some time to get your gifts to you loved ones before the holiday.

Here are some important deadlines:

  • First Class (Tuesday, Dec. 20)
  • Priority Mail (Wednesday, Dec. 21)
  • Priority Express (Friday, Dec. 23)

While there aren’t any major weather delays right now, the post master said you may want to factor that in because there is some coming west of Lincoln.

"Folks need to keep that in mind if they’re mailing something out and it’s really important to get there, the sooner the better to get it in the mail,” Kowalski said.
