Huge Voter Turnout Expected In Nebraska

Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale predicts high voter turnout for the Nov. 4 election. Gale expects 72 percent of registered voters to cast a ballot, compared with his prediction of 53 percent for November 2006 and 27 percent for this year's primary.

In the 2004 presidential election, Gale predicted 75 percent turnout. The actual turnout was about 68 percent, a record in terms of total number of people who voted. The turnout record based on the percentage of registered voters is nearly 81 percent, set in November 1968. Gale cites high interest in the presidential race, as well as high-profile state races and a battle for the 2nd Congressional District's electoral vote. The state has nearly 1.16 million registered voters. ___
