Lincoln – For the second straight day, clutch hitting powered No. 12 Minnesota to a hard-fought victory over the Nebraska softball team, as the Golden Gophers pulled away late for an 8-3 win Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.

Minnesota scored five of its eight runs with two outs, and the Golden Gophers produced six of their 12 hits with two outs, including an RBI single and a pair of two-run doubles. While Minnesota delivered several clutch hits, Nebraska was just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, and the Huskers failed to get a runner home from third base with less than two outs on five different occasions.

Nebraska mounted the game’s first scoring threat in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Cassie McClure drew a leadoff walk before senior Steph Pasquale doubled to put runners on second and third. But the next two Huskers struck out looking before senior Kylee Muir laced a line drive right to the left fielder.

After the Huskers were unable to score with runners on second and third and no outs, Minnesota used a two-out rally to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. The first two batters were retired before three consecutive singles plated the game’s first run. Hannah Granger then produced a two-run double to give the Gophers a 3-0 advantage.

Nebraska stranded a runner at second in the third before finally coming through with a clutch hit in the fourth. After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the fourth, junior Dawna Tyson and sophomore Kat Woolman delivered back-to-back singles. Muir followed with a two-run double over the center fielder’s head to pull the Huskers within one. Jablonski then tied the game with an RBI single to right that knotted the score at 3-3.

Tyler Walker put Minnesota back in front when she led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run.

Nebraska missed another scoring chance in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore MJ Knighten was hit by a pitch to begin the inning before junior Alicia Armstrong walked. A fielder’s choice put Huskers at first and third with one out before reliever Nikki Anderson escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play.

Minnesota then came up with clutch hits in the top of the sixth to plate a pair of two-out runs and take a 6-3 lead. With a runner on first and two outs, Paige Palkovich singled before Walker lined a two-run double to left.

Just as they did in Friday’s one-run victory, the Gophers continued to tack on insurance runs in the late innings. A walk, a single, a sacrifice and a two-run single stretched the Minnesota lead to 8-3 in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Nebraska loaded the bases with one out but was unable to score.

With the loss, Nebraska falls to 17-14 on the season and 5-2 in Big Ten Conference play. Jablonski (1-4) took the loss for the Huskers, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. McClure tossed the final 2.1 innings, surrendering four runs.

Woolman produced Nebraska’s lone multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 day, while Muir drove in two of the Huskers’ three runs.

Kylie Stober (6-1) earned the win for Minnesota, allowing three runs in 4.0 innings. The Golden Gophers stretched their school-record winning streak to 15 while improving to 29-4 on the season and 5-0 in league play.

Nebraska and Minnesota wrap up their series on Sunday at Noon.
