Tallahassee, Fla. – The 19th-ranked Nebraska softball team gave No. 6 Florida State all it could handle on Sunday, but the Huskers’ rally fell just short in a 3-2 loss on the Seminoles’ home field.

Nebraska grabbed its first lead of the weekend when junior Kiki Stokes blasted the second pitch of the game over the wall in center for a leadoff home run.

Florida State answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The first two Seminoles walked before Alex Powers hit a three-run homer.

After the rocky start, freshman right-hander Kaylan Jablonski settled in while producing the best start of her young career. She allowed only one hit and two walks over her final 4.0 innings while retiring the final 10 batters she faced.

Jablonski’s effort kept the game at 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth, when the Huskers rallied. Senior Steph Pasquale began the inning with a single before Jablonski walked. Freshman pinch runner Gina Metzler would score on a one-out wild pitch to trim the lead to 3-2. Junior Dawna Tyson then walked to load the bases with one out to knock Lacy Waldrop, the 2014 National Player of the Year, out of the game. But Bailey Schinella came on in relief and coaxed an infield pop out and strikeout to preserve the lead.

Junior right-hander Emily Lockman relieved Jablonski in the bottom of the sixth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to stretch Nebraska’s streak to 13 consecutive hitters retired.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Nebraska was unable to put the tying run on base, as the Huskers were retired in order by Schinella, who earned the save by retiring the final five batters.

Waldrop (5-2) earned the win for Florida State, which improved to 7-3 on the year with all three losses to top-10 opponents. Jablonski was the hard-luck loser for NU, allowing three runs on just three hits in a career-high 5.0 innings.

Offensively, Stokes hit her team-leading fourth home run, while junior Alicia Armstrong produced Nebraska’s lone multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort. The Huskers out-hit Florida State, 3-2.

Nebraska (4-6) looks to bounce back next weekend against a tough field at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Huskers will face three top-20 teams in their five-game schedule, plus battles with San Diego State and Oregon State.
