West Lafayette, Ind. – Behind another strong pitching performance and more timely hitting, the Nebraska softball team earned a series victory at Purdue with an 8-0 run-rule victory in Sunday’s finale at Boilermaker Stadium.

In the circle, Nebraska posted its second straight shutout, while the Huskers allowed only one run in the series. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman notched her second shutout of the year to improve to 12-11. Lockman fired a three-hitter and worked around three errors, striking out four and walking only one.

Offensively, Nebraska collected seven hits and was 5-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Junior Alicia Armstrong homered as part of a 1-for-4 day that included a season high four RBIs, which also tied her career high. Senior Steph Pasquale was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs, while freshman Laura Barrow was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored.

The Huskers took advantage of an illegal pitch call to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Junior Kiki Stokes drew a two-out walk and stole second base before Purdue intentionally walked sophomore MJ Knighten. Armstrong then appeared to fly out to left, but the out was erased on an illegal pitch call. Given new life, Armstrong took full advantage, blasting a three-run homer three pitches later.

Nebraska put up four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Barrow got the rally started with a one-out single before Stokes walked and Knighten was hit by a pitch. Armstrong then drove in her fourth run of the game with an RBI ground out. Pasquale followed with a clutch two-out, two-run single that stretched the lead to 6-0. Junior Mattie Fowler then walked before classmate Dawna Tyson reached on an infield single to load the bases again. Senior Kylee Muir capped the inning with an RBI single to left field. On the play, Fowler was thrown out at home attempting to score from second.

The Huskers then brought the run-rule into effect with a run in the top of the sixth. Barrow doubled with one out, advanced to third on a ground out from Stokes and scored on an RBI single from Knighten, who extended her hitting streak to 21 games.

Lockman then faced the minimum in the bottom of the seventh to help the Huskers improve to 22-18 on the season and 10-4 in Big Ten play. Purdue fell to 25-16 with the loss, falling to 5-7 in league play. Freshman Gina Snyder (6-1) suffered her first career loss, allowing seven runs on three hits in 4.2 innings.

Nebraska wraps up its seven-game road trip on Wednesday at UNO.
