Las Cruces, N.M. – The 18th-ranked Nebraska softball team used another big offensive performance and an unconventional no-hitter to run-rule the Montana Grizzles, 13-4, in six innings Saturday morning in Las Cruces, N.M.

Despite allowing four runs, the Huskers notched just the second combined no-hitter in school history and the first since 1999. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski and sophomore Cassie McClure combined on the program’s 37th no-hitter. Jablonski threw the first 3.0 innings, allowing four runs (two earned). McClure (2-0) earned the victory, tossing 3.0 innings of shutout relief.

Offensively, six Huskers produced multiple hits in the victory. Junior Alicia Armstrong produced three hits for the second straight day, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Classmate Kiki Stokes homered for the second day in a row while going 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs. Senior Kylee Muir matched Stokes with four RBIs while adding a double as part of a 2-for-4 day.

A trio of freshmen rounded out the six Huskers who produced multi-hit efforts. Jablonski produced her first multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Laura Barrow finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Gina Metzler was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

As a team, Nebraska finished with 13 hits while scoring more than 10 runs for the second straight game. The Huskers (2-1) have now scored 33 runs in their first three games this season. NU scored nine times in the top of the third inning against Montana, marking the third time in three games the Huskers have scored at least six runs in an inning.

Carli Riordan (0-2) took the loss for Montana, which dropped to 0-4 in its first season of softball. Riordan gave up seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings.

Nebraska scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Stokes and Armstrong began the game with back-to-back infield singles before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore MJ Knighten. McClure was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Muir lined a 3-1 pitch to left field for a two-run single.

The Huskers then exploded for nine runs in the top of the third inning. The first batter of the inning was retired before the next 10 hitters reached base safely. Armstrong reached on a bunt single before Knighten and McClure drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Muir then lined a two-run double to left center to give Nebraska a 4-0 lead. Jablonski followed with a two-run double of her own to stretch the lead to 6-0.

After a Montana pitching change, Barrow and junior Mattie Fowler worked back-to-back walks to load the bases again. Metzler picked up her first career RBI with a sharp single to left that scored Jablonski. Stokes then cleared the bases with a grand slam that scored Barrow, Metzler and sophomore pinch runner Rachel Arthur. Stokes’ first career grand slam capped the nine-run inning and gave Nebraska an 11-0 advantage.

The Grizzlies got two runs back in the bottom of the third without recording a hit, scoring on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.

Montana used a similar formula to cut the deficit to 11-4 with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Grizzlies again scored without a hit, plating runs on a fielder’s choice and a wild pitch.

The Huskers brought the run-rule back into effect with a two-run sixth inning. McClure began the frame with a walk before Jablonski doubled for the second time in the game. Barrow then brought both runners home with a two-run double to left center.

McClure then retired the Grizzlies in order in the bottom of the sixth to wrap up Nebraska’s second run-rule victory of the year.

Nebraska wraps up Saturday action at the Hotel Encanto Invitational against Texas Tech.
