Huskers Sweep In Home Opener
(Lincoln-ap) — Nebraska collected eleven hits and five pitchers combined on a shutout in an eight-to-nothing victory over Western Illinois in the second game of a doubleheader today (Wednesday) in Lincoln. The Huskers won the opener five-to-three. Nebraska starter Justin Pekarek scattered three hits and struck out four in five innings of the second game to raise his record to two-and-oh. Dustin Timm, Brett Jensen, Jeremy Becker and Mike Sillman allowed three hits, walked one and struck out six the rest of the way. James Kalinowski took the loss for Western Illinois and fell to one-and-two. In the opener, Jesse Boyer's two-run single highlighted the Nebraska second inning. Colin Shockey, Jake Mullinax and Chad Steele had two hits apiece for the Huskers. Freshman Brad Furnish pitched five shutout innings in his first start. Patrick Kohorst took the loss to drop to one-and-two. None of the four runs against him were earned. The Huskers are now ten-and-four and the Leathernecks nine-and-13.
