I-80 Closed Due To Stand-off

An armed man who ended up killing himself on Interstate 80 this afternoon forced troopers to shut down parts of Interstate 80 for hours.

The Nebraska State Patrol says about six miles of the Interstate was closed between Gretna and the Mahoney State Park exit.

The incident started around 12:20 p.m. when the suicidal man stopped his vehicle in a Westbound lane after being pulled over by a trooper.  The State Patrol says the driver refused to exit or respond to the officer's commands shortly after 2:00 p.m.

The Sarpy County Emergency services unit approached the vehicle, where they say they found the man dead from a self inflicted gunshot.

Traffic was diverted onto highway 6 between exits 432 and 426. One lane of Westbound traffic was re-opened around 2:45 p.m. The two other lanes remained closed as of 3:00 p.m.
