Inmate Escapes From Saline County Deputies In Lincoln

A review is underway of safety procedures following the escape Wednesday of an inmate being brought back to the State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

Byron Johnson is a maximum security inmate who's still on the loose. Officers say he got out of his leg and arm shackles and ran away. Saline County Deputies were bringing him back to prison after a court sentencing when the escape happened.

Channel 8 Eyewitness News spoke with Johnson's mother shortly after the escape. She says he's bipolar and should be considered dangerous. Donna Romero said, “I knew he was planning on an escape, but i didn't think he'd really do it. I mean, he's been talking' about it, but i thought: 'how's he gonna' get out of this penitentiary.”

A Department of Corrections spokesman says officers are looking at Johnson's phone and personal visitation records to find anything that could help in the investigation. The department is also checking its own security measures to see how to stop the same thing from happening again.
