As the new year begins, some people are finding themselves being laid off at CHI Health St. Elizabeth. This comes after they joined forces with Alegent Health hospitals and other Catholic Health Initiatives last September.

When we spoke with them in November, they did hint that changes could be coming.

“Just by our size, we need to be able to work together for the best patient experience, improved quality and lower our costs,” says Libby Raetz, Chief Nursing Officer.

At that time, they said 1,500 people could be affected, but would be spread between 90 hospitals coast to coast. St. Elizabeth spokeswoman Jami Blair declined to comment how many positions are currently being affected in Lincoln.

CHI has also been dealing with a five month dispute with insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield.

In a statement, hospital officials say “We are currently evaluating staffing and have limited our recruitment while also eliminating some positions for the organization. This work is on going and we will not comment any further until decisions are made and communicated internally. We have embarked on a series of initiatives that are focused on bringing two health care organizations together and are finding opportunities to do things differently and more efficiently.”

St. Elizabeth employs more than 1, 350 people in Lincoln. Again, officials will not comment on the specific number of layoffs.
