Kids need second chicken pox vaccination

Nebraska children will need to have a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine before the next school year. A state law that goes into effect July 1 requires the additional shot for children entering kindergarten through 12th grade.

The state's chief medical officer, Dr. Joann Schaefer, says parents should start scheduling the shot now to avoid the back-to-school rush.

Schaefer says some cases of chickenpox can be severe, and a second dose of the vaccine can help protect children who didn't build adequate immunity from the first dose.

The Nebraska Department of Health says children usually get that first dose around their first birthday and the second on or after their fourth.
