Lawmakers Debate Mental Health Reform Plan

A compromise has not been reached on a Mental Health Reform Plan that could lead to closing the regional centers in Hastings and Norfolk. However, lawmakers did begin debating the issue Wednesday on the floor of the Legislature. The proposal is backed by Governor Mike Johanns and would move toward community-based care. Meanwhile, the cities of Hastings and Norfolk are unified against the proposal. They say, closing the regional centers would be an economic blow to their communities. The Legislature did not vote on advancing the plan Wednesday. They will pick up the issue again in the next few days.
