Leachman will receive Carson award in Norfolk

Organizers say celebrated comedy actress Cloris Leachman will be in Norfolk to receive the Johnny Carson Comedy Legend Award.

The award will be presented June 18 during the Great American Comedy Festival.

Leachman was born in Des Moines, Iowa. She's won nine Emmy awards and an Oscar and is playing a wacky grandmother on the TV comedy series “Raising Hope.”

Carson's name has been added to the award, which has been given to Dick Cavette, Bill Dana and Ed Asner since its inception in 2008.

Carson, the longtime TV talk-show host of “The Tonight Show,” was born in Corning, Iowa, in 1925. He moved with his family to Norfolk when he was 8 and graduated from Norfolk High School. The comedy festival is held yearly in Norfolk in his honor.
