Learning to Fly

Flying seems to have developed into more of a routine then an experience for many travelers. But, if you want to take back the excitement, channel 8 eyewitness news reporter Darby Bybee tells us you'll have to get behind the wheel.

“Alright, we're here at performance flight training, I guess they're going to let me fly a plane…” nah, I'm not nervous. “let's go check it out.” “Greg, Greg love right?” “that's right.” “and are you going to be training me today?” “I will, we'll try to make it something very similar to something I would do on the first flight, including ground instruction and flight instruction.”

The first thing you need to know when you go flying is the weather. “so, we're gonna have a cross wind, we're gonna have a cross wind from right to left that's going to try and blow us across the runway.”

Well, at least we've got clear sky's. It's a cold morning as we set out for our small, but sturdy Cessna airplane. After a few instructions, a check list, and some general advice we're almost ready to take off. “It'll become intuitively obvious as we're moving in the airplane.” “yeah until we run into another airplane.” “do you think I'm ready to go?” “oh yeah, yeah, you're gonna have a good time.”

It was about this time that I realized my flight instructor actually expects me to fly the plane. Nonetheless, it didn't take long for his prediction to come true. “yeah baby! now we're flying!”  “what is so great about flying for you? what makes this so incredible?” “it's freedom, free to explore, this is a realm a lot of people don't get to experience.”

The scene from above is spectacular, but what goes up must come down.  “I've seen better, I've seen worse.” “I'm so happy to be on the ground.”

The president of performance flight training, Bill Heckathorn tells us flying isn't just for the rich and famous anymore. It's affordable, and it changes the lives of everyone involved. “the first time somebody takes a business trip, or takes their family somewhere or does a solo flight their just lit up, you know? and, to be a part of that experience with them and to be helping facilitate that for them is really rewarding.”
