Legislature Passed Budget Plan
The budget ball is now officially in Governor Mike Johanns' court. The legislature passed its balanced budget plan, which relies on higher taxes and less spending cuts than Johanns wanted. The three main bills all passed with enough votes to override an expected veto from the governor. Under the lawmakers current plan.61 million dollars would be cut in state aid to public schools over the next two years. To make up for that, school districts would be allowed to raise property taxes. Part of another bill includes closing the Lincoln Correctional Center. Governor Johanns has made it clear he will not support that bill.
