CHANNEL 8 EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER *KAREN MORFITT* HAS MORE.
JAIME KRAFT, MIKE MULLENDORE AND BRENT FOXHOVEN WENT TO WORK ON WEDNESDAY MORNING EXPECTING A TYPICAL DAY…THEY NEVER IMAGINED THEY'D COME HOME HEROES
“there was black smoke and we knew it was bad.”
THE THREE MEN WERE WORKING ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE APARTMENT COMPLEX AT 35TH AND BALDWIN AVENUE, WHEN THEY NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE BUILDING.
“I don't know what I was thinking…I didn't know what I was expecting to see when we came around the corner….all I know is we had to do something
IMMEDIATELY THEY JUMPED INTO ACTION…
MIKE RAN TO THE TRUCK GRABBED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER..AND CALLED 9–1–1 THE OTHER TWO HEADED TOWARD THE APARTMENT
“we just started knocking on doors and windows and tried to get everyone out of the house.”
ONE OF THE RESIDENTS WAS HEADED OUTSIDE WITH HIS TWO CHILDREN WHEN HE TOLD THEM HIS BABY WAS STILL INSIDE…
MIKE MADE HIS WAY THRU THICK BLACK SMOKE AND SCOOPED THE BABY FROM A BED..
“when I didn't hear mike calling… I went in and all I could see was a little bundle of white blankets… I said Mike is that you do you have the baby and he said yeah and we left.”
LINCOLN FIRE AND RESCUE ARRIVED JUST TWO MINUTES AFTER THE 9–11 CALL WAS MADE… AND IN THOSE TWO MINUTES THE CREW MANAGED TO GET EVERYONE OUT SAFELY…
THEY ALL AGREE IT WASN'T SOMETHING THEY DID LOOKING FOR RECOGNITION…IT WAS JUST INSTINCT.
…we were just in the right place at the right time I guess.
