Lincoln Bridge Closed Due To Safety Concerns
A bridge in downtown Lincoln has been closed to car traffic out of safety concerns. The 72-year-old Holdrege Street Bridge was closed Wednesday after city officials said inspections showed it was in worse shape than expected.
The bridge remains open to pedestrians and bicyclists. Public Works Director Greg MacLean says there's no danger of it collapsing, but pieces of it are starting to fall off.
The city hired an engineering company in June to study whether to replace, remove, repair or close the bridge. That prompted a more in-depth inspection this week, and the decision was made on Wednesday to close it.
Officials say the results of the study should be ready in a week or two and then a decision on the bridge's future will be made.
