Lincoln voters to decide on city contract issue

Lincoln voters will decide in May whether to let the mayor, council members and department heads hold contracts with the city.

There was tension Monday night at the city council meeting as both sides sounded off on the issue. Council members voted in favor of sending the measure to the May 7th  election.. But not before holding a public hearing.  The mayor says it would end conflicts of interest.

“The public must have confidence and trust in the integrity of city government and deserve to be represented by public officials who maintain the highest ethical principles in avoiding any conflict of interest—real or perceived,” former council member Patte Newman said.

“Let's not make someone choose between providing a service at the lowest possible cost through a competitive bid process for fellow citizens and also providing leadership on any number of other issues before the city council,” Kyle Fischer with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce said.
