Lincoln woman needs help to help others

A Lincoln woman is hoping to change the lives of thousands of Nebraskans with physical limitations.

She's competing with the rest of the country to do it!

Mary Johnson says it all started with an idea and never thought she would be working to win $50,000 dollars to help make it a reality.

“Imagine being told you can't do something you really enjoy.”

For Vincent Litwinowski it's a reality he's been forced to live with everyday since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

“Oh I used to be very active, I worked in construction and then I went back to UNL to get my engineering degree but I had to quit because of my physical disability.”

Litwinowski is just one of several Nebraskans who have had to limit their lives due to a disability.

Something Mary Johnson says no one should ever be faced with and is working to change.

Johnson wants to open a non-profit gym specifically designed for anyone with a disease or injury that limits mobility.

She is one of thousands of contestants entered to win $50,000 dollars in Pepsi's Get Up and Go Contest.

Money that would go directly to making ideas' like Johnson's a reality.

“What we want to do is provide a place where people feel excepted and supported where they can exercise these are not just your run of the mill exercises they are fundamental exercises meant to improve active daily living in other words we want people to remain independent as long as they possibly can,” says Johnson.

But in order to win Johnson needs community support.

She needs as many online votes as she can get.

Although she is competing against people from places like New York City and Los Angeles Johnson is sure she can pull it off.

One thing she has in her favor: a community like Lincoln.

“It's all up to the community and that's the whole idea behind this project the community decides ideas they like, ideas they are passionate about  and I know Lincoln is a great community if they get behind something I know we can beat these big cities, ” says Johnson.

Right now Johnson's idea is ranked in the top 200.

She needs to be in the top ten to win the grant money.

Johnson says if they don't win the contest she hopes she can still work with anyone willing to help make her idea a reality.
