If you’re on the lookout for a summer job, the Lincoln YMCA is hiring. It employs more than 900 people a yeare, and a third of those come during the peak summer season. This year they have more than 300 job openings.

"A lot of the people we’re hiring ar counselors, assistant counselors," says Lincoln YMCA CEO J.P. Lauterbach. "The outdoor pool will open, so a lot of the staff we hire will be lifeguards; swim instructors."

Positions are both year-around and seasonal. They are looking for all ages and backgrounds, but this time of year provides a unique opportunity for high school and college students on summer break.

"In high school, we’re kinda getting pushed to become better adults," says Cate Noudaranouvong, who has worked at the Y for a year and a half. "I definitely feel like getting a job helps you grow."

Cate works as a lifeguard, dance instructor, climbing wall supervisor, and more.

"After trying new thing after new thing, I found myself become a better teacher and understand how to work with kids better," she said.

There are four Lincoln YMCA branches, and another set to open near 84th and Highway 2 in the spring of next year. This will provide even more jobs to the community.

"We’re very fortunate that that’s the nature of our business," Lauterbach said. "To be community-minded and a community service organization."

The Lincoln YMCA has more than 82,000 members and has been in the area for 145 years.
