Local racing legend dies at 84

The the racing world is saying goodbye to a local legend. Lincoln native and founder of Speedway Motors D. William “Speedy Bill” Smith passed away Friday at the age of 84.

Smith was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall Of Fame in 2000.

His death was announced Saturday during the Hall’s induction weekend in Knoxville, IA.

Smith founded Speedway Motors in 1952. It’s America’s oldest speed shop and ranks among the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of racing parts.

Sprint Car Hall Of Fame officials say he was a legendary figure, who will be sorely missed.
