Local retailers hiring holiday help

It may seem early, but already some retailers say it's the most wonderful time of the year, at least for anyone looking for work this holiday season.

Nationally, holiday hiring is up in the air this year, and locally, it's looking up for anyone needing extra money. Retailers around town are stocking their shelves and their employees for the upcoming holiday season.

They're hoping the extra staff is needed for shoppers like Barb Rieken. Barb says she looks for holiday sales, but plans to spend money.

“I am more cognizant of looking for sales and things like that. Bargains that I might not spend so early if I can find it on black Friday. I look at the ads and coupon things,” Rieken said.

Mid-September is when many of the local retailers start hiring holiday help, including Four Star Card and Gift Gallery. They say they need the extra help because they're hoping for a 5 percent increase in sales this year.

“Almost 40 percent of our business happens in the months of November and December combined. So it's a much bigger part and you've got things like gift wrapping and some extended hours, particularly during the month of December,” Jim Plucknett of Four Star Card & Gift said.

Major retailers like Walmart and Kohl's are also hiring more people this year. Together more than 100,000 people, that could mean more than 100 positions in Lincoln alone.

“Having extra staff so we can still have that same level of service is really important to us and to the consumer,” Plucknett said.

More holiday shoppers may be searching the web for gifts this year. It's unclear whether or not it will affect local stores.
