Nebraska Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy says his adult son was injured when he accidentally shot himself in the face with a handgun.

Sheehy says he is grateful that the injuries his 21-year-old son, Joel, sustained early Wednesday do not appear to be life threatening. Sheehy says Joel Sheehy was handling a gun he owns in his Omaha apartment when the gun fired early Wednesday.

The bullet struck Joel Sheehy's right cheek and exited behind his right ear. But Sheehy says the full details of the incident are not immediately available. Joel Sheehy is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon to repair facial fractures. He was in stable condition. Rick Sheehy has cancelled all his public events through Sunday.
