Man killed in Hastings explosion identified

The Nebraska fire marshal says a man killed in an explosion and ensuing fire south of Hastings was making explosive devices. A news release issued Wednesday by Ray Nance identified the man as 49-year-old Frank Meyers Jr.

The release says Meyers died of blood loss after several arteries were severed in Tuesday afternoon's explosion. The accidental explosion and fire destroyed a two-car garage and damaged two other buildings on a farmstead south of Hastings.

Brad Friesen of Henderson had been working near the scene and said he saw fireworks going off for several minutes. Nance says Meyers was illegally manufacturing explosive devices, but wouldn't characterize them as fireworks.

He says he's not sure what the devices were, but they were “much more than fireworks.''
