Most of us dream of throwing the game winning pass, hitting the game winning home run or making the game winning basket. Few of us actually see this dream come true, but Matt Kelly has. In 1989, he hit the game winning shot, which propelled Millard South to a state basketball championship.
Matt recognized his passion for sports even at an early age. “I always wanted to be a TV Sportscaster, from as early as I can remember,” Matt says. He adds, “As a former athlete I wanted to stay involved with sports and if I couldn’t play, I thought I could at least cover them (sports) as a sportscaster”. While attending the University of Nebraska Omaha, Matt worked three years as a sports intern at KMTV, Omaha. His work was obviously noticed because KETV in Omaha later hired Matt to produce and anchor sports. Before coming back to Nebraska, Matt was the weekend sports anchor at WOI-TV in Des Moines.
Matt is happy to be at KLKN and equally happy to be back in Nebraska. “Being from Omaha and having covered sports in Omaha, Des Moines and Lincoln, I feel that Lincoln is one the best college sports markets in the country,” Matt beams. “The best part of my job, is that it doesn’t feel like a job. I love what I do and I try the best I can to convey that to our viewers”. Sounds like a man who has seen his dream come true.
Another dream came true in December of 2000 when Matt’s wife gave birth to their first child. So what do you think Matt does when he’s not at work? You probably guessed it. But on the rare occasions when he’s not spending time with his wife and daughter, Matt loves to golf and on occasion picks up the pumpkin and tries to relive that game winning shot. And although viewers are surprised at his 6’4″ height when they meet him in person, Matt would like to remind you that when you see him on Channel 8 Eyewitness News, most of the time…he’s sitting down.
