Mayor Proposes Skyscraper

More parking and more jobs could be coming to downtown Lincoln.

Lincoln Mayor Coleen seng announced the city's new plan to revamp a portion of the downtown area.

It would happen at 13th and Q streets.

The city wants to build a new parking garage and high-rise building above it, along with a brand new civic square.

Mayor seng says this new project will be a great benefit for the city.

But, two restaurant owners will have to relocate.

The owner of Was says, “It's not a surprise to us. We are still challenged to try to be able to relocate with the same things we have here.”

Starship 9 Theater and the Taste of China would also have to relocate.

The city says the new parking garage could add 400 to 600 more parking stalls for the area.

There are also plans to turn the vacant Douglas 3 Theater on 13th and P streets into a future civic square.

The Mayor says they will open up opportunities to private developers for the new high-rise.

If built, it would become the tallest building in downtown with up to 25 floors.

For both Wasabi and Taste of China, the owners hope that the city will be able to help them keep their business alive.

The city has purchased the Starship 9 and Douglas 3 Theaters for a combined amount of around three million dollars.

The city will take ownership in June.
