More Budget Cuts Being Sought in the Legislature
Lawmakers are faced with a projected 756 million dollar budget gap. And time is running out to find a solution. Tuesday is the 78th working day of the 90-day session. Omaha Senator Ernie Chambers said he doesn't see any way the legislature can avoid having to meet in special session.
Lawmakers are debating making more spending cuts to avoid raising taxes as much as 355 million dollars. Senator Phil Erdman of Bayard filed a 163-page amendment that would make another 80 million dollars in cuts. But some senators criticized his effort, saying it was too comprehensive to work through at this late date. Other lawmakers praised Erdman for trying to find a middle ground. Debate on the budget continues.
