The number of motorcycles on Nebraska roads is nearing a record high.

But sadly, 2012 is proving to be a deadly year for riders, with motorcycle fatalities on the rise.

At this time last year, there were 7 motorcycle fatalities, but this year, that number is already at 12.

Jeff Brandl owns Brandl Cycle in Lincoln.  He urges everyone to take a rider's safety course, but he also knows that something's are simply out of your control.  “but even the most prepared, the most experienced riders can't prepare themselves for everything. Things happen in a split second and there's nothing you can do. All you can do is put the odds in your favor by riding safely, obeying the law, don't drive intoxicated, so on and so forth,” Brandl says.

AAA offers a few suggestions, too…never tailgate a motorcycle, keep in mind that bikers often travel in groups, so if you see one, there may be others nearby, and for motorcyclists, never ride above your skill level.
