Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team practiced for 90 minutes in full pads on Thursday, with the defense working out in the Hawks Championship Center and the offense inside Memorial Stadium.
Head Coach Mike Riley met with the media after practice to discuss the Huskers’ season opener against Fresno State on Saturday.
“I feel great going into the game,” Riley said. “I believe our guys will be fresh and our goal has obviously been to have them prepared. If we can play fast and prepared, then we’ll be all right.”
Riley mentioned that sophomore safety Antonio Reed will not be playing in the Huskers’ season opener against Fresno State due to a minor knee injury.
“Antonio has had a little bit of a knee issue. He probably is not going to play and hasn’t been practicing,” Riley said. “We might still take him to the hotel, but my guess is he won’t play. He’ll be ready next week we believe. Corey Whitaker was back. He did a great job. Right now, Sam will start. Corey is ready to go a couple different spots probably.”
Riley also expressed how important the fans will be for the season opener.
“Our fans help out in every which way,” Riley said. “You know the one thing is, just the game itself will be a major help. We think that a night game here in Lincoln, what we’ve seen of it so far is absolutely unique and different and electric. So that part of it you know our fans being our fans, are a big help. You know, all the other parts that they’ve played a part in like social media and all that. That’s all been well documented on the role that they have played with a lot of players.”
Although season tickets are sold out for the 2016 season, fans who want to see the Huskers in person this season at Memorial Stadium can purchase single-game tickets from returning visiting team allotments.
