Neb. man pleads guilty over unattended daycare

A Grand Island man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a 2009 incident in which children were left unattended at his mother's daycare.  21-year-old Andrew Mitchell entered the plea Tuesday to four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He'd originally been charged with 10 counts of child abuse. Mitchell's mother, Tammy Heaton, operates the daycare. Prosecutors say she went home to sleep on Nov. 12, 2009, leaving her son in charge of 10 children ages 4 to 12.

When a woman arrived about 11 p.m. to drop off her children, she found the daycare unattended. Prosecutors say Mitchell returned after police arrived and said he'd been at a friend's home next door.

Mitchell will be sentenced Sept. 6 in Hall County District Court.
