Nebraska seniors Caroline Flynn, Jaycie Johnson and Sydney Miramontez each earned a spot on the Big Ten Women’s Soccer Preseason Honors List, released by the conference on Monday.
Flynn, a Lincoln, Neb., native, led the 2015 Huskers with five goals and enters her final season at NU with 10 career goals. During the summer, Flynn played for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team, and helped the team win the Nordic Tournament in England. She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member, and has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors on three occasions.
Johnson begins her senior campaign with 31 career goals, which ranks 10th in program history. She scored three goals in nine games in 2015 before a season-ending ACL tear. In 2014, Johnson added 11 goals after scoring 17 during a breakout freshman season in 2013, where she helped NU to Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.
Miramontez led the 2015 Huskers with five assists, starting all 17 games for the Big Red. She added one goal, and also claimed Academic All-Big Ten recognition for the second time during her career. Miramontez enters her senior season with five career goals and seven career assists.
The trio played a key role during NU’s 4-0 exhibition win over North Dakota State on Saturday night. Johnson scored two goals in 60 minutes of action, while Flynn scored once and added an assist in 40 minutes.
In addition to the preseason honors list, the Big Ten released its preseason poll from the conference’s 14 head coaches, who could not vote for their own teams. Nebraska placed eighth in the rankings.
The Huskers open their regular season on Friday night at Hibner Stadium against Marquette. Kickoff for the match is set for 7:05 p.m.
