Houston – Emily Lockman took a no-hitter into the final inning, while Taylor Edwards and Alicia Armstrong both homered in a six-run first inning, as the eighth-ranked Nebraska softball team defeated Army, 7-0, Friday night in Houston.

Lockman did not allow a hit until a one-out double in the top of the seventh inning. She then retired the next two batters to preserve her second shutout in three starts this season. In firing a one-hitter, Lockman (1-0) struck out four and worked around a pair of walks.

With Lockman in control in the circle, senior Taylor Edwards and sophomore Alicia Armstrong each homered to power the Husker offense. Edwards slugged a two-run homer and Armstrong belted a three-run shot. Armstrong finished 2-for-3, and she tied her career high with three RBIs.

The Huskers jumped out to a 2-0 lead just three pitches into the game. Sophomore Kiki Stokes was hit by the first pitch of the game before Edwards blasted a 1-0 pitch well over the fence in right-center field for a two-run homer. Army then recorded two outs before freshman Austen Urness was hit by a pitch and junior Mattie Fowler followed with a walk. Armstrong then belted an 0-1 pitch to left center for a three-run homer that stretched the Husker lead to 6-0.

Nebraska didn't threaten again until plating one run in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Hailey Decker led off with an infield single, stole second and scored on a two-out double from Fowler. Fowler finished with a pair of walks in the game, in addition to her RBI double.

That proved to be all the scoring, as Army's pitching held up after the big first inning. Braetana Roy (0-1) took the loss for the Black Knights, which fell to 0-2 on the season. Roy allowed seven runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, but surrendered only one run on two hits over her final 3.2 frames.

Nebraska (5-1) returns to action tomorrow, facing Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State on day two of the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic.
