Nine-Run Fifth Powers Nebraska Past UNO
Lincoln – With the game tied at 1-1, the Nebraska softball team exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to walk off with a 10-1 run-rule victory over UNO on Wednesday in the Huskers’ home opener at Bowlin Stadium.

Nebraska’s sixth run-rule victory over the season improved the Huskers to 9-11 on the year. The win also marked NU’s 11th consecutive home victory, while the Huskers won their home opener for the 10th consecutive season and for the 13 times in 14 seasons at Bowlin Stadium.

The offensive explosion made a winner of sophomore right-hander Cassie McClure in her Bowlin Stadium debut. After allowing a run in the top of the first, McClure settled down and shut out the Mavs over the final four innings, tossing a complete game to improve to 5-2.

The Huskers’ decisive nine-run fifth inning was capped by junior Dawna Tyson, who hit a pinch-hit three-run homer to end the game. Nebraska pounded out nine hits in the win, including two-hit games from junior Kiki Stokes and sophomores MJ Knighten and Kat Woolman. Woolman also drove in a pair of runs.

UNO jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Allie Mathewson singled to begin the game and quickly stole second base. She advanced to third on a ground out and scored the game’s first run on an RBI single from Tonya Peterson.

The Mavericks nearly added to their lead in the top of the third before some great defense from the Huskers. Following a leadoff walk to Lia Mancuso, Campbell Ditto lined a ball off the fence in right center. Mancuso tried to score on the play, but Stokes hit freshman second baseman Laura Barrow, who threw home to senior catcher Steph Pasquale in time to get Mancuso. Ditto then tried to advance to third and beat the throw but overslid the base, as Nebraska tagged her out for a double play.

The Huskers then tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Stokes led off with a bunt single before Knighten laced an RBI double to right center.

Nebraska was scoreless in the fourth before exploding for its nine-run fifth. NU loaded the bases with no outs as Barrow drew a leadoff walk before Stokes followed with a bunt single and Knighten was hit by a pitch. After an infield-fly pop out, Pasquale was hit by a pitch to score Barrow and give Nebraska a 2-1 lead. Junior Alicia Armstrong followed with an RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-1.

A UNO error scored sophomore pinch runner Lotte Sjulin before junior Mattie Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 5-1. Woolman then grounded a two-run single up the middle that scored sophomore pinch runner Rachel Arthur and freshman pinch runner Gina Metzler.

Leading 7-1, Tyson entered the game to pinch hit and lined a three-run homer over the fence in left field. Her first homer of the season dropped UNO to 9-10 on the year. Kat Barrow (3-3) took the loss for the Mavericks, allowing six runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings.

Nebraska heads to Fullerton, Calif., tomorrow for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday at the Easton Invitational.
