NEB WBB: Page Helps Serbia Oust Aussies in Rio

Danielle Page scored five points while adding four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot to help upstart Serbia to the biggest upset so far in women’s basketball at the Rio Olympics with a 73-71 win over Australia on Tuesday morning at Youth Arena.

Page, a 6-2 forward from Monument, Colo., who lettered for the Huskers from 2005 to 2008, hit 2-of-3 shots from the field and added a free throw while distributing an assist to help her adopted country of Serbia to its third consecutive win at the Olympics. Serbia advances to the semifinals to take on the winner of today’s game between Spain and Turkey.

Serbia battled past the No. 2 team in the world Australia thanks to 24 points from Ana Dabovic, 17 points from Jelena Milovanovic and 13 points and five assists from Sonja Petrovic.

Page has played a huge role for Serbia throughout the Olympics as one of the major factors in them advancing to medal contention. She is one of four players for Serbia averaging in double figures, producing 10.8 points per game, while her 5.5 rebounds per contest leads the squad. She is also averaging a team-best 1.8 blocks per game, while contributing 1.0 assists and 0.8 steals through six games in the 2016 Olympics. Page is shooting 57.7 percent from the field while playing nearly 28 minutes per game.

Page opened Olympic play with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field for Serbia in a 65-59 loss to Spain on Aug. 7. Page added five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. She managed four points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals for Serbia in a 71-67 setback to Canada on Aug. 8.

In a loss to Team USA on Aug. 10, Page led Serbia with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including a pair of three-pointers.

She produced 12 points and eight rebounds in an 80-72 victory over China on Aug. 12. Page hit 6-of-8 shots from the floor against China, while adding three assists and a blocked shot to give Serbia its first win of the Rio Olympics.

Page followed with 15 points and eight more rebounds in a win over Senegal on Aug. 14 that secured Serbia’s spot in the medal round.

Overall, Page has produced double figures in four of Serbia’s six games.
