Nebraska Guard Members Honored Wednesday

Governor Mike Johanns was one of many people honoring the Nebraska National Guard Wednesday. At an awards ceremony, he presented a Purple Heart, as well as three bronze stars. But there was also, one long awaited surprise. As the Governor started his comments he announced a surprise visit. The remaining 21 members of the 1057th Light Medium truck Company arrived to a standing ovation. The rest of their unit returned last week.

Then Governor Johanns presented the Purple Heart award to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Brewer, a soldier who was shot 6 times in Afghanistan. Brewer says he still has trouble talking about the day his unit was ambushed. He was alone, in the dark, and running out of ammunition. He credits his marksmanship with helping him survive, and days like Wednesday are helping him move along.
