Nebraska Posts Pair of Sweeps, Rises to 12-1

The No. 36 Nebraska women's tennis team posted a pair of sweeps on the weekend at the Nebraska Tennis Center, downing Saint Louis 7-0 on Friday before breezing past Colorado 7-0 on Sunday. The wins push the Huskers to 12-1 on the season while increasing NU's win streak to 11 consecutive matches.

Nebraska kicked off the weekend on Friday evening against the Saint Louis Billikens (4-5), where Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova (NU) jumped out to a quick 8-1 win over St. Louis's Jen Nalepa and Maria Toro Moreno (SLU) in No. 1 doubles. Capturing the doubles point for the Huskers was Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein's (NU) 8-1 victory over Stephanie Hollis and Mia Elmore (SLU) at the No. 2 position.

Izabella Zigerska and Maike Zeppernick (NU) wrapped up Nebraska's doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Brooke Urzendowski and Madeline Jolley (SLU). Following doubles play, the Huskers had a 1-0 lead as the match moved into singles action.

The Huskers and Billikens moved to the singles courts after a short break, and Nebraska wasted no time in continuing their sweep. Maike Zeppernick posted the second point for the Huskers with a 6-0, 6-0 match against Saint Louis' Madeline Jolly in No. 6 singles.

Veresova moved the Huskers one point closer to clinching the match win with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Saint Louis' Stephanie Hollis. Weatherholt (NU) secured the win by capturing the fourth victory in a straight-set win in No. 1 singles. Weatherholt posted a final score of 6-1, 6-2 against Jen Nalepa.

Although the match was already won, the Huskers were not done yet. Stefanie Weinstein added to the Nebraska lead with a win over St. Louis's Mia Elmore 6-1, 6-2 on the No. 3 singles court. Also picking up a point was Nebraska's Janine Weinreich on the No. 4 singles court with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nebraska native Brook Urzendowski.

Izabella Zigerska (NU) completed the sweep for the Huskers on the No. 5 singles court. Zgierska posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over St. Louis's Maria Toro Moreno, finalizing the tally at 7-0 in favor of the Big Red.

Following a break on Saturday, Nebraska returned to action against Colorado (6-4). Weinreich and Weinstein wasted no time in getting an 8-1 win over Colorado's Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio in No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles pair of Weatherholt and Veresova clinched the doubles point for the Huskers, recording an 8-3 win over Kristina Schleich and Julyette Steur (CU).

Zgierska and Zeppernick secured the Huskers' doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory over Colorado's Ashley Tiefel and Ana Anuszkiewicz. The Huskers would move to singles play with a 1-0 match lead over the Buffaloes.

No. 106 Weinreich (NU) picked up the second point for the Huskers, a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Manzi Tenorio (CU) at the No. 4 position. Veresova (NU) made quick work over Schleich in No. 1 singles, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Schleich (CU).

Husker freshman Zgierska gave NU the match-clinching fourth win, a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Colorado's Ana Anuszkiewicz at the No. 5 position. Nebraska didn't slow up, as No. 55 Mary Weatherholt picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win over Colorado's Winde Janssens in No. 2 singles. Maike Zeppernick pushed the Huskers one step closer to a sweep, downing Colorado's Ashley Tiefel 6-3, 6-3 in No. 6 singles.

Stefanie Weinstein completed the sweep with a hard-nosed victory over Colorado's Steur. After dropping the first set, Weinstein battled back to pick up the victory, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8).

The Huskers will be back in action next weekend in Lincoln, hosting a pair of big matches as they welcome Iowa and No. 30 Tulsa to town. The Huskers will first host their Big Ten opener on Friday, March 9, as they take on Iowa at 5 p.m. NU will then challenge the No. 30 Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
