Nebraska softball edges UNO 2-1

Senior Ashley Hagemann fired a four-hitter and the Husker offense scored twice in the fourth inning of a 2-1 win over UNO on a rainy Tuesday night at Bowlin Stadium.

The reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, Hagemann allowed one earned run or less for the seventh straight start to lead Nebraska to its fifth win in a row. Hagemann (11-10) allowed four hits or less for the third straight start. She gave up only three singles and allowed just one run, while striking out 13, tying her season high and marking her third consecutive double-digit strikeout game.

The Huskers won the first-ever Division I meeting between the two in-state programs in any sport to improve to 16-12 on the season. UNO fell to 10-9 and saw its six-game win streak snapped. Dana Elsasser (5-5) took the loss, allowing only one earned run in a complete-game effort.

UNO jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first despite not hitting a ball out of the infield. Hagemann struck out the side, but in between allowed a bunt single and walked three, included one with the bases loaded.

After stranding four runners over the first three innings Nebraska scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Tatum Edwards led off with a double and junior Brooke Thomason followed with an infield single. Edwards then advanced to third on a wild pitch and beat a throw home on an RBI fielder's choice ground ball from junior Courtney Breault. Thomason then scored when senior Nikki Haget reached on a two-out error.

The Mavericks threatened in the top of the seventh when Emma Wright won a long at bat with a one-out double that popped out of the glove of a diving Haget in center. But Hagemann secured the victory by striking out the final two hitters.

Sophomore Taylor Edwards paced Nebraska's six-hit attack with a 2-for-3 day. Tatum Edwards and Guile added a double apiece, while Thomason and senior Madison Drake each had a single.

Nebraska returns to action on Friday, hosting Northwestern at 5 p.m. in the program's first-ever Big Ten Conference game.
