Cathedral City, Calif. – A 10-run first inning doomed the Nebraska softball team in a 10-2, five-inning loss to No. 14 LSU in the first of two games Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
LSU took control of the game before Nebraska had its first turn at bat. The Tigers (15-0) had five hits in the 10-run first inning – including a three-run homer – and were aided by five walks.
Nebraska cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, plating two runs. Freshman Gina Metzler began the inning with a single, before junior Kiki Stokes lined a hard shot to left field for an RBI triple. Sophomore Cassie McClure then cut the lead to 10-2 with a two-out, RBI single.
Unfortunately those were the only runs Nebraska could muster, as the Huskers fell to 5-7 on the year. Despite the loss, McClure did an outstanding job in the circle after a rough outing from freshman right-hander Kaylan Jablonski (0-3), who allowed 10 runs on five hits in 0.2 innings. McClure got the final out of the first inning and retired LSU in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. McClure sat down all 13 batters she faced, tossing 4.1 perfect innings.
Offensively, Stokes finished 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored, as the hits were even at five apiece.
