The Husker softball team finished up the Easton Tournament at Cal State Fullerton Saturday. They finished 1-1 on the day. Here are two game stories detailing Nebraska’s performance starting with their first game with DePaul and finishing with their game against Cal State Fullerton.

Fullerton, Calif. – The Nebraska softball team exploded for a season-high 13 runs in a 13-2 run-rule victory over DePaul in the first of two games Saturday at the Easton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif.

The Huskers batted around in a six-run second inning and a seven-run fourth inning. Every spot in the order scored a run in the win, as 10 different Huskers crossed home plate. NU finished with 16 hits, one shy of its season high and its highest total in a game of fewer than seven innings.

Five Huskers produced multiple hits in the victory, while four players drove in multiple runs. Junior Kiki Stokes was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, while sophomore MJ Knighten was also 2-for-4 with three RBIs hitting behind Stokes in the lineup. Sophomore Cassie McClure added two doubles as part of a 3-for-4 day that included two RBIs.

McClure (7-2) also earned a complete-game victory in the circle. She scatted seven hits and allowed two runs.

With the win, Nebraska improved to 12-11 on the season. DePaul fell to 7-15.

After being held scoreless in the top of the first, Nebraska exploded for six runs in the top of the second. Junior Dawna Tyson and senior Kylee Muir singled on the first two pitches of the inning before DePaul recorded the first out. Freshman Laura Barrow then produced an RBI single to score freshman pinch runner Madi Unzicker.

Leading 1-0, Nebraska erupted for five two-out runs to close out the inning. Stokes ripped a two-run double to push the lead to 3-0 before she scored on an RBI single from Knighten. Junior Alicia Armstrong followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Armstrong then stole second and a throwing error on the play allowed Knighten to score from third. McClure helped herself by capping the six-run inning with an RBI double.

DePaul answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 6-2. The Blue Demons produced four consecutive hits that led to the two runs, but a pair of DePaul runners were thrown out trying to take an extra base, preventing a possible big inning.

Nebraska struck for seven more runs in the top of the fourth. The first batter of the inning was retired before Armstrong walked and scored on an RBI double from McClure. Tyson then produced an RBI single that scored sophomore pinch runner Lotte Sjulin and stretched the lead to 8-2. A walk to Muir put Huskers on first and second for junior Mattie Fowler, who delivered a two-run double to make it 10-2.

Following the second out of the inning, sophomore Kat Woolman singled before Stokes produced an RBI double that plated freshman pinch runner Taylor Otte. Knighten then capped the seven-run inning with an RBI single that put the Huskers on top 13-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, McClure worked around a one-out walk to close out Nebraska’s 10th run-rule victory of the season.

The Huskers wrap up their play at the Easton Invitational with a final game Saturday against host Cal State Fullerton.

Fullerton, Calif. – One game after totaling a season high in runs, the Nebraska softball team was shut out for the first time in a 3-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at Anderson Family Field. NU managed only four hits in the loss. The Huskers did not get a runner past first base in the first five innings. Then in the top of the sixth, sophomore MJ Knighten and junior Alicia Armstrong delivered back-to-back singles before an intentional walk to sophomore Cassie McClure loaded the bases with only one out. Junior Dawna Tyson then hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded by Cal State Fullerton second baseman Samantha Garza. In a call heavily disputed by the Nebraska coaching staff, Garza was ruled to have tagged out freshman pinch runner Taylor Otte before throwing to first base to complete an inning-ending double play.

That proved to be Nebraska’s best scoring chance, as the Huskers were retired in order in the top of the seventh. The lack of offense spoiled a strong performance from junior right-hander Emily Lockman, who fell to 5-7 on the year. Lockman, the victim of several infield singles, pitched better than her line indicated, as she allowed three runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort.

Despite the loss, Nebraska completed a 4-1 week that included a 3-1 showing at the Easton Invitational. The Huskers (12-12) were able to even their season record thanks to the strong week.

Cal State Fullerton improved to 17-12 on the year with the win. Desiree Ybarra tossed the Titans’ third consecutive shutout, firing a four-hitter.

CSUF jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Courtney Rodriguez tripled with two outs and then scored on a wild pitch.

Rodriguez struck again in the bottom of the third, producing a two-run single that pushed the lead to 3-0.

That proved to be the last runs of the game, as Lockman and Ybarra kept the offenses at bay for the remainder of the game.

Nebraska returns to action on Friday, March 20, when the Huskers open Big Ten Conference play with game one of a three-game series with Michigan State at Bowlin Stadium.
