Nebraska unemployment remains 2nd lowest

Nebraska's unemployment rate remained the second-lowest in the nation in February.

The unemployment rate registered 4.3 percent. The state Department of Labor said Friday that the February unemployment rate equaled the revised January rate of 4.3 percent. Last February's rate was 4.9 percent.

Starting next month the national Bureau of Labor Statistics will take over the monthly state unemployment reports. Officials say that change will reduce the amount of local input and likely produce more monthly rate variability for smaller states like Nebraska.

Nebraska's unemployment remained much better than the national rate of 8.9 percent in February even though that improved from January's 9 percent and last February's 9.7 percent. Nebraska trailed only North Dakota's 3.6 percent unemployment in February. South Dakota rounded out the top three with 4.8 percent unemployment.
