Nebraska’s Small Pox Plan
With the looming threat of possible attacks against Iraq, U.S. officials across the nation and here in Nebraska are preparing for a possible bio-terrorism attack on our soil. One thing they're most concerned about, smallpox. It's extremely contagious, and deadly. Nebraska's Chief Medical Officer says a plan here, could be to vaccinate everyone in five days of the outbreak. Small pox is spread through exchanging infected bodily fluids and on rare occasions the virus is spread through the air. The symptoms begin like the flu, then your fever rises. In a day or two your body breaks out in lesions. Three out of ten people will die. The last known case in the U.S. was in 19-49. So if you have already had the vaccine, no one knows for sure if it will protect you.
