New bill would change discrimination laws

If a new bill is passed it would change how we utilize discrimination laws.  Senator Beau McCoy wrote the bill. Under it, Nebraska counties and cities couldn't impose local rules when it comes to protecting groups. They'd have to abide by state laws.

McCoy says keeping everything the same statewide is better in the long run.  “If it is discrimination in one particular community in Nebraska, why is it not discrimination in any particular community in Nebraska? Does discrimination stop at a city limit border? I say no,” Sen. Beau McCoy said.

Sexual orientation isn't protected in the state, so it's not included in this bill and some members of the gay community say they're being left out.  The bill will go before the Judiciary committee for a hearing on Wednesday.
