NU Bowling team wraps up day one at NCAA Championships

The Nebraska bowling team finished its first day of competition at the NCAA Championship on Thursday evening. The Huskers, searching for their ninth national championship in program history, finished the day with an overall record of 4-3, good enough for the two-seed heading into the Friday's action. The Huskers will face off with seven-seed Central Missouri on Friday morning at 8:50 a.m.(CT).
Vanderbilt earned the top seed going into Friday morning's first-round. The Commodores went 5-2 on the day, with the team's only losses coming to Sacred Heart and Nebraska.

Friday's matches will be a best-of-seven baker format where all five bowlers alternate frames of the match. The first team to win four games will advance.
Thursday's action saw the Huskers bowl a traditional game against each of the other squads in the championship field.
The Huskers started the day hot, winning each of the team's first four matches against Maryland Eastern Shore (1,173-880), Valparaiso (1,018-981), Fairleigh Dickinson (948-931) and Vanderbilt (1,009-962) before dropping three-straight to Central Missouri (1,009-1,036), Sacred Heart (962-970) and Arkansas State (902-1,008).
Individually for the Huskers, Kayla Johnson led the way with a 216.3 average through seven games, shooting a high game of 245 on the day. Her performance was good enough for second-overall on the day, second only to Valparaiso's Natalie Cortese (218.4). Kristi Mickelson finished ninth through seven games with a 201.43 average.
Three other Huskers bowled their way to top-twenty individual performances.
