NU Softball beats North Dakota State 8-0

The Nebraska softball team cruised to its ninth straight win on Wednesday, run-ruling South Dakota State 8-0 in five innings at Bowlin Stadium.

The ninth straight win capped a perfect 7-0 homestand for Nebraska, as the Huskers improved to 20-12 on the year. Sophomore right-hander Tatum Edwards (6-2) earned the victory, tossing a one-hit shutout. Edwards did not allow an earned run for the second straight start. She allowed only one ball to leave the infield against the Jackrabbits and struck out four.

Offensively, senior Madison Drake went 2-for-3 with a home run, while tying her career high with three RBIs. Junior Brooke Thomason doubled and drove in three as well, while senior Nikki Haget finished 2-for-2

Nebraska jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first. Haget began the frame with a single, before junior Gabby Banda followed with a walk. Sophomore Taylor Edwards then scored Haget with an RBI single to left to give the Huskers a 1-0 lead. On the play, Banda moved up to third and Edwards advanced to second, but they were stranded there as the next three batters were retired.

The Huskers added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the second. Senior Kirby Wright worked a one-out walk before Drake launched a two-out home run just inside the left-field foul pole. Haget then reached on an infield single before an error put runners on first and second with only one out, but Nebraska was unable to further build its lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Huskers loaded the bases with one out when Drake was hit by a pitch and Haget and Taylor Edwards walked. Senior Ashley Guile then scored Drake to make it 4-0 with an RBI infield single. With two outs, Thomason cleared the bases with a three-run double to left center. Leading 7-0, two more walks loaded the bases again for Drake, who delivered a two-out, RBI single to bring the run-rule into effect.

Kori Seidlitz (1-7) took the loss for South Dakota State, which fell to 4-16 on the season.

Following its seven-game homestand, Nebraska hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at Minnesota.
