NU T&F: Husker multi-eventers open Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The four-day Kansas Relays kicked off on Wednesday with the first day of multi-events at Kansas’ Rock Chalk Park.

At the midway point of the decathlon, the Husker men have the top three athletes: Cale Wagner (unattached), Guy Fenske and Cody Walton. In the women’s heptathlon, Lamisha Simmons leads the Huskers in third place.

Four of the five decathlon events were won by Huskers on Wednesday. Wagner, a freshman from Seward, Neb. who is competing unattached as a redshirt this season, won three of them: the 100 meters in 11.00, the long jump in 22-9 1/4 (6.94m) and the 400 meters in 50.21. He took second in the high jump by clearing 6-3 1/2 (1.92m) and was fourth in the shot put (38-11 1/2).

Wagner’s 3,795 points has him 46 points ahead of Husker junior Guy Fenske, who has 3,749 points. Fenske, the 2014 Kansas Relays champion, won the shot put with a throw of 42-11 1/2 (13.09m) and was second in the 100 meters (11.01) and the long jump (21-11, 6.68m). He tied for fourth in the high jump (6-2 1/4).

Walton is in third with 3,680 points. The sophomore was second in the 400 meters with a time of 50.25, second in the shot put with a throw of 42-2 (12.85m) and fourth in both the 100 meters (11.14) and high jump (6-2 1/4).

Simmons, a freshman from Hallandale, Fla., has 2,847 points in the heptathlon. She took second in the 200 meters (25.45) and the 100-meter hurdles (14.45). Hailey Luken is in seventh with 2,701 points, and Morgan Pieri is 14th with 2,475 points. Kelley Carden is 16th with 2,263 points.

The multi-events continue on Thursday at 9 a.m., while a handful of Husker throwers compete in the afternoon.
