NU Women’s Gymastics finishes 5th at NCAA Championships

After advancing to the NCAA Championships for the 21st time in school history, the No. 6 Nebraska women's gymnastics team was unable to advance to the Super Six finals at the 2012 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships on Friday afternoon, finishing in fifth place in the first semifinal at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga. Needing to finish in the top three to advance, NU posted a 196.625. UCLA (197.400) finished in first, followed by Utah (197.200) and Stanford (197.125).
Although the Huskers team season came to an end on Friday, several Huskers earned All-America honors and advanced to the individual event finals on Sunday. Freshman Jessie DeZiel was a first-team All-American on floor and in the all-around, while also earning second-team honors on the vault. Emily Wong took home first-team honors on beam, while Janelle Giblin was a first-teamer on vault. All of the Huskers' first-team All-Americans will compete in the individual event finals on Sunday at Noon (CST). Giblin was a second-team honoree on the uneven bars and Wong finished on the second team on floor and in the all-around.
The Huskers started their meet on bars, posting a 49.15 after hitting every routine. Giblin continued to lead NU on the event like she has done all season, scoring a team-high 9.875. Nebraska received a pair of 9.85s from Wong and Eventstad, who opened and closed the event for NU, respectively. DeZiel hit a 9.80 and Schleppenbach and Skinner both put up a 9.775.
Nebraska moved to beam where they posted an even 49.00. Wong posted a 9.90 to lead the Huskers, and was followed by a pair of 9.825s from DeZiel and Lauer, who kicked off the event. Skinner tallied a 9.80 and Giblin put up a 9.65 to help NU reach a total of 98.15 after two events. Nebraska would receive a bye in their next rotation before returning for floor and vault.
On floor, the Huskers were anchored by three impressive routines to end the rotation. Wong continued her impressive day by scoring a 9.875, while DeZiel tallied a 9.90 to lead NU. Evenstad closed the event off with a 9.85. Giblin scored a 9.80 and Schleppenbach kicked the floor routines off with a 9.825. The Huskers scored a 49.25 to move their team total to 147.400 with vault remaining.
Nebraska finished strong on vault in its last event, putting up a 49.225 to help the NU reach a team total of 196.625. Giblin earned first-team All-America honors with her vault of 9.925 and was followed by DeZiel who scored a 9.90. Evenstad matched her season-high with a 9.85 in NU's first vault, while Skinner and Wong scored a 9.80 and 9.75, respectively.
The Huskers competing in the event finals will compete from the Gwinnett Center at Noon (CST) on Sunday. The event finals will be aired live on ESPN3.com.
