Omaha baby rescued from hot car

A baby is recovering after being rescued from a hot car in an Omaha parking lot.

Police say witnesses heard the baby crying in the lot at the Big K store in east-central Omaha on Monday around 6:30 p.m. National Weather Service records say the temperature was about 95 degrees at the time. Officers found the child in the locked car. Its windows were slightly open. The baby was flushed, sweating and lethargic. Officers broke a car window to reach the child, who was taken to Nebraska Medical Center and is expected to survive.

The child's mother, 26-year-old Adrienne Elliott, eventually returned to the car and was cited on suspicion of child neglect. A public phone listing for Elliott could not be found. Court records don't yet list the case.
