Omaha Officer Fires Shot At Vehicle

An Omaha man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted felony assault on an officer after a disturbance in a hospital parking lot ended with a police officer firing his gun.

Police spokesman Jacob Bettin said Officer Fred Hiykel was in a Creighton University Medical Center parking lot at about 4 a.m. investigating a misdemeanor assault when an unrelated disturbance began.

As Hiykel made his way to the scene, a vehicle was driven toward him. Bettin said Hiykel fired a shot, which hit the fleeing vehicle.

The 21-year-old man suspected of driving the vehicle was arrested. He was not injured by the gunfire.
